Why Create a Family Biography?
In 2011, I interviewed my parents with a simple idea in mind: to capture their stories before time slipped away. We talked for hours about childhood memories, family traditions, and life’s pivotal moments. These interviews became invaluable when my father passed away a few years later. I edited the footage into a memorial video that brought my father’s voice and presence back to us at his funeral—a deeply moving experience for everyone in attendance. It wasn’t until years later, during the pandemic, that I revisited those interviews and turned them into a full-length documentary. What I learned in the process was how important and healing it can be to look back, but also how time-consuming it is to gather the pieces of someone’s life. That documentary is now part of our family’s history, and my daughter, born after my father’s death, will one day get to know him—his smile, his laugh, his stories—through that video. This is the gift that documenting a life can give to your loved ones.
